Urola Greenway Route

The old Urola train route

The Urola Greenway connects the towns of Azpeitia and Legazpi following the course of the Urola river. The route starts at the Garmendipe sports centre of Azpeitia and leads us directly up to the Sanctuary of Loiola. Upon arriving at the Loiola station, the asphalt road gives way to a trail from the park in front of the Sanctuary. If you decide to make a halt at Loiola, you can visit the spectacular monumental site comprising the Tower-House of Loiola and its Basilica.

Continuing towards the right of the sanctuary we will again reach the Greenway and we enter the beautiful valley formed by the Urola river. This stretch is very popular among walkers, skaters, and cyclists. Once in Azkoitia, the route passes by the old train station which has been converted into a municipal library. Here the road diverts into two and there are two alternatives: one is through calle Xabier Munibe up to the Urola river in the direction of the town plaza; the other consists in crossing the Elkargune sports centre tunnel and through calle Ibaiondo. Those who choose the first option will have a chance to see the historical centre of the town, visiting the parish church of Santa María la Real and the Idiakez Tower-House, among others. The historical centre of Azkoitia has been designated as a monumental site and it hosts numerous buildings of great value.

Following the course of the river we should go towards the neighbourhood of Jausoro to continue on the Greenway. Leaving behind the urbanisation and the adjacent industrial park, a mountainous landscape opens up dotted with bridges and tunnels that will take us to the old Aizpurutxo station. This neighbourhood located about 5 kilometers from Azkoitia is built on both sides of the Urola river. It has a pelota court, two restaurants and the San Agustín church (1904).

Following the Urola river the path passes by the Aginaga recreational area. From this point on, the landscape changes completely from being a narrow and enclosed valley to a more spacious and bright one. It is dotted with meadows and country houses until reaching the old Urretxu station. Continuing on the the Greenway we reach the centre of the town.

The route continues along the railway track that Patricio Etxeberria an entrepreneur from Legazpi used for transporting goods up to his factory located in the town. Passing by the Zumarraga station, the path runs between factories and mountains until reaching Legazpi. The route ends when it reaches an industrial zone located about 500 meters from the town centre. It is possible to continue the route along the cycle track built between the town and Mirandaola where the Basque Iron Museum is located. Crossing the park we can reach the neighbourhood of Brinkola and its train station (line C-1/Brinkola-Irun). This could mark the end of the route or the beginning of a new journey.
